Hemsedal travel guide | What to do besides skiing!

Sking destination Hemsedal in Norway is a winter wonderland for skiing enthusiasts, but what if you’re not big into skiing? Worry not! Today I’m sharing all my best tips on what you can do in Hemsedal besides sking! After working here for a few seasons, I have realized there is a lot to do besides skiing, which is good for you!

if you’re new here. hi, I’m Nat! An adventurer from Sweden. Back in 2016 I quit my job & sold most of my belongings to embark on a nomad adventure. I love to share everything I learn with you on this blog and social media, I hope you enjoy it.

Hemsedal Klatresenter

If you want to get out of the cold for a while, Hemsedal’s indoor climbing hall is a fun place to get your blood pumping! They offer both bouldering & walls for climbing for all different levels, from children and beginners to more advanced climbers.

Opening hours vary throughout the season. Check out Hemsedal Fjellsport for the latest updates.

Rjukandefossen

Just outside of Hemsedal, a short walk from the parking lot you will find Rjukandefossen, a gorgeous waterfall. It’s a beautiful walk and you will notice that the falls look different each time you visit during winter! It’s my favorite short walk around here when you feel like you want to be surrounded by nature without having to go far.

Guided snowshoe tour

There are options to go on a snowshoe tour, it’s an amazing opportunity to experience the Norwegian mountains without a pair of skis. If it’s hard to find information about snowshoe tours in English, try searching for ‘‘guided trugetur’’ which is what it’s called in Norwegian.

Check out here for booking options: Hemsedal.com | Hemsedal Aktiv

If you feel confident, you can rent a pair of snowshoes from MOH for a day and embark on your own adventure! Just make sure you take safety precautions.

Aking

If you want to experience the slopes without a pair of skis, you can join in on a snow racer adventure down the ski slopes after opening hours! This is beyond a good time!

Let your inner child take the steering wheel, sit back, and ‘‘relax’’ in the passenger seat. It was incredibly hard to break, a tip is using your legs for stability!

Fyri POOLCLUB’

If you, like me, feel like you need to escape the cold & dark winter sometimes, I have the solution for you! The pool club at Fyri Resort lets you escape the winter paradise for a little while with its small tropical oasis. It’s the perfect place to relax, warm up your body, and walk around with skin showing without getting freeze damage. They have sunbeds, a warm relaxing dark room with a fire in the middle, 2 heated pools, one of them located outside, and a Sauna.

Don’t forget to book in advance! They offer different kinds of package deals and the Brunch package is nice on a day where you want full relaxation!

Fika pause

As the Scandinavian I am, I can’t make a travel guide without naming my favorite cafes! Perfect for a cloudy day, during a snowstorm, or whenever. Elmas Handel is located in the town center and Lodgen Spiseri is located at the bottom of the ski center. I’d go to Elmas for a coffee and cinnamon bun and to Lodgen for lunch or to try one of their famous hot chocolates - YUM!

On Sunny days in Spring, Fjellkafeen at the top of the Hollvin lift provides the best views of the sun!

Hemsedal Kino

It’s very small, and only has selected viewings on certain days, but, Hemsedal has a cinema! Definitely, worth the 90NOK they charge adults for it! OBS! Vipps/Cash only

Dog sledding

Together with Hemsedal huskies you can leave the village behind you and let the dogs take you out in the wilderness on an extraordinary adventure!

Booking through Hemsedal.com

Coffee tasting

You can enjoy a coffee tasting from the local Scandinavian Alps coffee roasters, that’s right! Hemsedal has its own coffee roaster.

You can book this activity on Airbnb experiences.

Hope this helps for your next visit to Hemsedal!
